Discord publishing checklist: roles and channel permissions

Resolve Discord publishing access by checking server roles, channel overrides and the intended message or forum destination.

By the Postly Team

Before you start

Ask a server administrator to identify the intended channel and integration role. Server-level permissions can be changed by channel-specific overrides.

Prepare and review the release

  1. Confirm the server and channel names in Postly. Keep announcements separate from conversations where members expect discussion.
  2. Have the administrator inspect the integration's role and the target channel's permission overrides. Check access to view the channel and send the intended content.
  3. Prepare a message that fits the destination. A forum entry needs the forum-specific fields shown in the composer; a normal channel announcement has a different structure.
  4. Send an approved test and inspect its visibility from an ordinary member's perspective. Verify links and media before scheduling repeated community announcements.

Worked example

A community adds an announcements channel after connecting its server. The integration role has server access, but the new channel denies that role. The administrator adjusts the specific override, and a short event notice confirms the result without granting broad administrator access.

If something goes wrong

  • Channel missing: check visibility permissions and the selected server.
  • Text works but attachment fails: inspect the media-related permissions and the file separately.
  • Forum post fails: review its required title or other forum fields rather than treating it as a plain channel message.
