DEV.to cross-post checklist: attribution, code and discussion
Republish a technical article on DEV.to with accurate original-source attribution, tested examples and a useful discussion prompt.
By the Postly Team
Before you start
Use an authorized DEV.to account and confirm that you can republish the article. Record its original URL and whether the DEV.to version is a full copy or a different article.
Prepare and review the release
- Prepare the article title and body for DEV.to readers. Explain unfamiliar product context rather than assuming they already follow the original publication.
- For a republished article, review the canonical URL field supported by Postly's DEV.to workflow. Use the original article URL, not a marketing homepage or tracking redirect.
- Check code blocks, tags and any organization choice available for the account. Keep attribution and substantive caveats in the copied article.
- Review the published page and invite discussion about a specific technical tradeoff. Track corrections in both versions so the older copy does not become misleading.
Worked example
A company republishes a tested guide to pagination. It attributes the original engineering article, preserves the section about unstable ordering and asks readers how they handle concurrent inserts. The discussion prompt follows naturally from the example.
If something goes wrong
- Canonical incorrect: verify the exact original path and its public availability.
- API key rejected: review the connected account using the existing connection instructions.
- Readers find an error: correct the example and explain the change in both maintained versions.
