Reddit API setup

Connect Reddit to Postly

Create a Reddit developer app, add the Postly callback URL, and connect your own Client ID and Client Secret for subreddit-aware publishing.

Direct Reddit link posts are often filtered or removed. For better deliverability, create a text, image, or video post and place links in the first comment.

Setup Guide

BYO Reddit app setup

Follow the Reddit app preferences screenshot below to create a Reddit web app, paste Postly's redirect URI, then copy the generated Client ID and Client Secret into Postly to finish the connection.

01

Create a Reddit web app

Open reddit.com/prefs/apps and scroll to create application. Enter an app name, choose web app, and add a description. The About URL field is optional and is not used for the Postly connection, so you can leave it blank or add your website. Use web app because Postly needs both a Client ID and Client Secret.

02

Add Postly's redirect URI

In the Redirect URI field, paste Postly's callback URL exactly. Reddit checks the redirect URI during OAuth, so extra spaces, missing paths, or a different domain can prevent the account from connecting.

03

Create the app and copy your Reddit IDs

Complete the reCAPTCHA and click create app. After Reddit creates the app, copy the Client ID and Client Secret. The Client ID is the short ID shown under the app name, and the Client Secret is the secret value shown in the app details.

04

Connect Reddit inside Postly

In Postly, open the Reddit connection screen and paste your Reddit Client ID and Client Secret. Postly uses these IDs to send you to Reddit, receive the OAuth callback, and connect the authorized Reddit account to your workspace.

What Postly uses your Reddit app for

OAuth authorization

Postly sends you to Reddit for authorization, then Reddit returns you to the registered redirect URI after you approve access.

Post publishing

Postly can publish Reddit submissions after authorization. For best results, use text, image and video workflows instead of direct link drops.

First comments

Postly can add a first comment after the post is created, which is useful when a subreddit allows links but you do not want the main post to look promotional.

Flair

Where supported by the subreddit, Postly can load available flair options so you can choose the right label before scheduling.

Publishing Controls

Feature highlights for Reddit teams

A premium Reddit workflow should protect community trust while keeping teams fast. These are the controls Postly surfaces for planning, approvals and safer publishing.

Plan native-feeling video posts with titles and context.

Safe / Risky Comparison

Post type guidance

Reddit communities often reward native context and punish promotional shortcuts. Use these combinations as a practical preflight check before scheduling.

Text only=Reddit text post

Best default for community-first posts, tutorials, questions and launch context.

Safe
Text + image=Reddit image/media post

Use supporting text and flair to make the media useful inside the subreddit.

Safe
Text + video=Reddit video/media post

Pair video with a clear title, context and any allowed links in the first comment.

Safe
Text + link=Discouraged; move link to first comment

Direct Reddit link posts are often filtered or removed by subreddit rules and anti-spam systems.

Risky

Subreddit-aware publishing

Reddit is not one audience. Each subreddit has its own rules, flair requirements, moderator expectations and tolerance for promotion. Postly's Reddit workflow is built around choosing the community first, then shaping the post type, title, body and first comment to fit.

Safer Reddit marketing workflows

The goal is not to automate link drops. Postly helps teams plan useful text, image and video posts, review them before publishing, and keep direct links out of the main post when that improves deliverability.

Own your Reddit connection

With BYO Reddit app setup, Postly provides the redirect URL while you provide your Reddit Client ID and Client Secret. That keeps the publishing identity tied to your Reddit app instead of a shared Postly app.

FAQ

Reddit scheduler questions

Can Postly schedule Reddit posts?

Yes. The Reddit workflow is designed for scheduled text, image and video posts with subreddit selection, titles, body text, flair where supported and first comments.

Why does Postly discourage direct Reddit link posts?

Direct Reddit link posts are often filtered or removed. A safer pattern is to publish a text, image or video post and place allowed links in the first comment.

How does the BYO Reddit app setup work?

Postly gives you the redirect URL. You create or configure your Reddit app, then paste your Client ID and Client Secret into Postly to connect the account.

Does flair work for every subreddit?

Flair support depends on the subreddit and Reddit permissions. Where supported, flair should load dynamically for the selected subreddit.

Is Reddit automation safe?

Automation is safest when it respects subreddit rules, uses measured spacing, avoids spammy direct links and includes human review for sensitive posts.

Plan Reddit posts with safety built into the workflow.

Connect your own Reddit app, choose the subreddit, add flair where supported, review risky link behavior and schedule posts without using a shared Postly publishing identity.
